WRITING WORKSHOP

CHILDREN’S COMMUNITY SCHOOL, NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Experts have shown that engaging students with poetry helps with reading comprehension. Poetry is the creative exploration of language and provides an exciting and expressive language element within any classroom. By providing and structuring an atmosphere where few rules apply and flexibility is encouraged, students relax and have fun with images and words. Students learn to paint pictures with words, discuss themes, vocabulary, and use their six senses to describe responses to the different poems that are presented. The workshop culminates in a sharing of their writings and illustrations, which help foster group development and improves public speaking. The inclusion of music and cultural themes add a multidimensional aspect to the experience.
