WE RISE

GRADES 6-12

teaching artist and student write in school together for We Rise program

We Rise is an arts-infused program that aims to support ELA and Civics classes as they explore challenging, distressing, and critical topics like climate change, social justice, animal rights, or bullying. Over a series of in-school sessions, students apply writing and research from their ELA or Civics classes to spoken word poetry, visual symbolism, and collaborative musical experiences. The project deepens learning by providing safe spaces for students to research, explore, converse about, and process these topics. After-school sessions offer additional support for students to deepen explorations and process their ideas thoughtfully by engaging in an art therapy framework. The culminating We Rise exhibition is an opportunity for students to share their work with the community, amplify their voices, connect with others, and spark change in their community.
