NURTURING YOUNG ARTISTS

GRADES K-5

Students in grades K-5 work with a professional artist to develop a large-scale collaborative art project, while discovering their creative working process. The artist supports each students’ innate creativity by connecting them with themselves in the context of their classroom community, and guiding creativity through hands-on artistic practices.

Development of a strong creative and collaborative process supports imperative life skills like cooperative decision-making and creative problem-solving. Practicing these skills opens students to the possibilities of the unexpected, and encourages them to see that a diversity of minds, ideas and hands allows the generation of an authentic artistic expression that is larger than any one individual could create. Past projects have included large-scale Pattern Paintings created by following the rules of an invented game, and oversized Emotion Sculptures inspired by personal stories of heroism shared in the classroom.
